Example #6 Thank You's

Thank You's

When someone says "Thank you" to you, you feel respected. People say thank you because other people appreciate what you did. It makes you feel good and know you did something good that day.

Example #5 Feel Good About What you Wear

When you feel good about what you wear, your self respect may increase. Even if others don't like what you wear, knowing that you do can help you maintain a high level of dignity. If others like your clothes, they will compliment you and that can raise your self respect too.

Example #4 Inclusion

When you include someone, as opposed to excluding someone, they feel like they fit in. They feel like someone, and not a nobody that no one likes. This can raise peoples dignity (self-respect) because they know that people actually want to be with them.

Example #3 Compliments

When you compliment someone you make them feel good about themselves. They feel like someone, and not just a random person. They have more respect for themselves and it can change the mood of their day.

Example #2 Applause

When you applaud to/at someone when they do something special, like in a talent show or after a presentation, you make them feel "special." They will respect you and themselves, so everyone's dignity is increased. It makes the person feel good.

Example #1 "A+" on a Test

When a child aces a test, they feel good about themselves. They respect their hard work and determination. Their dignity will get higher and they will will feel better about themselves.

Introduction to the Project Part 2

Criteria:
In this assignment, you are asked to examine and challenge some of the ways our culture increases the dignity of men, women and children.

Example #6 and Example #7

Embarrassment - Other people may lose respect for you when you do something embarrassing or when you get embarrassed.

Failing a Test - People may look down on you or you may look down on yourself because you got a bad mark.

Example #5 Racist Jokes, Mean Jokes, Accents

People make fun of others by imitating their accent, making racist jokes (all asians have slit eyes), or mean jokes in general. These jokes may not effect everyone, but to some people they feel insulted and it makes them lose their self respect. Overall, some jokes make be funny, but others make people feel less important or "hurt."

Accents may be funny, but they make you think all people from a certain culture must sound a certain way. This makes people of that culture feel "stupid" because everyone will assume that they sound like that.

Example #4 Exclusion in the Playground

Exclusion is a form of people undermining other dignity that we all see today. In our playground at school, we try to include everyone, but we do exclude some people. It makes them feel like they don't belong, like an alien to this planet. This is a common way that dignity is undermined today in our lives.

Example #3 Discrimination

Discrimination is when you put down or exclude someone because based on certain characteristics. For example Black Skin. It hurts people on the inside and on the outside because people don't want to be with them just because of their skin colour.

If you were left out because of your skin colour or a certain attribute, how would that make you feel?

Example #2 Stereotypes

Stereotypes undermine peoples dignity because it's like a standard. Stereotypes hurt people because other people assume that your going to look a certain way or speak a certain way because of where your from or where you're seen. This can make you lose your self respect because people will make assumption about you before they even know you.

Example #1 One Child In China

Quotes from - http://geography.about.com/od/populationgeography/a/onechild.htm

Other info synthesized by me.

The one child policy in China is supposedly a "temporary measure." "The policy limits couples to one child. Fines, pressures to abort a pregnancy, and even forced sterilization accompanied second or subsequent pregnancies." People have "despised" having female children because the males apparently can take care of themselves when their older.

This makes the people in China lose their self respect because they can only have one child. They have to decide between a male or a female child. They only get one chance for a child and it puts a lot of pressure on them to make sure everything goes "perfectly."
